Like people mentioned in this post, it’s totally dependent on the hospital you’ll be working in, but the docs that I work with love to help students and my experiences with management have been great so far. Just wanted to say that I started my job at SA this week and I’m so happy with the decision I made. I also don’t doubt CityMD is a better company with a better culture that actually values its employees as more than a means to an end. I was fortunate that my “on-the-ground” managers were good, which likely contributed a lot to my positive experience, and I’m sure that’s not true everywhere. SA is a terrible company that exploits its employees shamelessly and it pays horribly. I also didn’t mind the wacky schedule in fact I really enjoyed overnights (some of the craziest stuff of all goes down during those shifts haha). Others are totally happy in an OP / UC setting. The minor procedures and low variety in cases will get old fast, and anything truly emergent or complex will get deferred to the ER, where the real magic happens. But if i were presented with your choice I think I’d still go with the SA position in the ER, because of the variety of cases and varying levels of exhilaration you get to experience. I think it’s cool that with CityMD you actually get more patient contact. We just don’t actually touch / help out with procedures, but I have all of med school / residency to do that. I disagree with the other commenter that you get barely any patient contact. I could talk about all I’ve seen, heard, and learned over the years and not stop talking for hours. I and my coworkers have seen the widest range of craziest, most interesting, and funniest stories possible, and our physicians were awesome. We were in all pods, not just fast-track, and we were a trauma center so we got to see absolutely every case imaginable. I had a fantastic experience in the ER, and it sounds like your site is similar to the one I was at. I agree with parts of what others are saying, but ultimately I would vote the ER position simply because it’s the ER and I’m biased. Have been with SA for years, starting out as an ER scribe and then in various roles in other specialties / management.
